About

CURE International India Trust (CIIT) began its service from April 2009 with a goal to eradicate disability caused by clubfoot in India and at present over 3,500 children are enrolled in this program nationwide. With over 150 children being born with clubfoot in India every day, the role of CIIT in establishing free clubfoot clinics is very relevant and significant. Through this initiative, CIIT aims to enlighten the public that clubfoot can be treated and neglected clubfoot leads to lifetime disability.

CURE International India Trust functions on behalf of CURE International, a global Healthcare NGO committed to establish teaching hospitals, wherever there is a need, and establish specialty programs globally. To begin with CIIT decided to work with clubfoot children in India as part of the CURE Clubfoot Worldwide (CCW).

From its inception CIIT has worked primarily with government healthcare programs. This not only helps CIIT establish clubfoot clinics which provide care at no cost to families, but also allows CIIT to reach the poorest of the poor. With the partnering state governments, CIIT agreed to manage weekly clubfoot clinics with the orthopedic department in government medical colleges and hospitals. In the partnership, government entities commit to assign doctors who will participate in the free clubfoot weekly clinics and ensure that the casting materials are available for the treatment. State office space is also allotted.

What is Clubfoot?

Clubfoot is one of the most common birth deformities that affects over 2,00,000 new born children every year in the world. Children born with clubfoot have feet turned inwards, pointed downwards, and bent in the middle. In India it is estimated between 40,000 and 50,000 children are born with clubfoot every year. The incidence of clubfoot is 1-2 in every 1000 child birth. Goal of CURE Clubfoot India is to eventually eradicate disability caused by clubfoot in India.

Clubfoot has grave physical and social consequences. If untreated, educational and employment opportunities are less for the children born with clubfoot, and in addition, mothers of children with physical disabilities have to spend more time looking after them and therefore have less time for their other children or for domestic, agricultural or economic activities. This often results in a reduced standard of living for the entire family. There are cases where the mother is held responsible for the deformity in the child. Some people misunderstand clubfoot with polio, whereas with Ponseti Method, Clubfoot is treatable and can be corrected.

What is the Ponseti Method?

Named for the late Dr. Igancio Ponseti, the Ponseti method is a specific method of manipulation to stretch contracted ligaments which uses a prescribed formula of serial casting, tenotomy (under local anesthesia), bracing, and follow-up visits. When an infant is recognized to have clubfoot, the Ponseti method is regarded as the most effective method to treat clubfoot. It is easy – it is performed in outpatient clinics. It is effective – 90% of clubfeet are successfully treated. A 45-year post-treatment study show mobile, pain-free, flexible feet. There is minimal scarring and bone development is not hindered. It is efficient and economical – treatment occurs from birth, with complete correction often within 2-3 months, using affordable supplies and equipment. The tenotomy is a minimally invasive surgery able to be performed in an outpatient clinic setting using local anesthesia.

CURE Clubfoot Delhi


CURE Clubfoot Delhi was launched, with a refresher training on Ponseti Method of Clubfoot management that was organized jointly by Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya (CNBC) and CIIT in March 2009. During the first anniversary public event at the Delhi Secretariat in May 2010 a MoU was signed between Govt of National Capital Territory of Delhi and CIIT.
A medical training was organized on the 29th Oct 2011 at CNBC; on this occasion, Hon Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Delhi released the updated manual on Ponseti Method of Clubfoot Management.
In May 2012 in a meeting chaired by the Hon Health Minister, Dr AK Walia, the Hon Chief Minister Smt. Sheila Dikshit inaugurated state level Clubfoot awareness campaign and the MoU was renewed for another 5 years.
In Delhi there are 11 weekly clinics and there are over 2800 children enrolled for free treatment for clubfoot.

CURE Clubfoot Karnataka


In Sept 2010 an agreement was signed with government of Karnataka. Rotary is partnering with CIIT in Karnataka and so far seven children are supported by Rotary with Rs 10,000 for every child. CCK organized two regional training programs so far, one in Sept 2010 and the second one in Oct 2011 for doctors from all south Indian states.

CURE Clubfoot Tamil Nadu

Even though a program was inaugurated in Aug 2009 at the Institute of Child Health, Egmore, Chennai, due to lack of funding, the program couldn’t start until March 2011, when CBM (SAROS) accepted the proposal for a state level program. An agreement was signed in Dec 2010 and at present there are 5 clinics in Tamil Nadu. Rotary is partnering in the awareness building program. There are over 525 children enrolled in this state program in the last 9 months.

CURE Clubfoot Bihar

Bihar has a population of 100 million and with 35% birth rate over 35,00,000 children are born every year. It is estimated that 5000 to 7000 children are born with clubfoot every year. In March 2011 agreement was signed between Bihar Government and CIIT. In April Hon Chief Minister of Bihar introduced a Health card for all children below the age of 15 to study the health status of children and clubfoot is included in this card. CIIT will be asked to follow up with the clubfoot children identified through this state-level campaign to ensure completion of treatment. There is also a request from the state to provide one lakh posters to be placed in all the aganwadis.

CURE Clubfoot Kerala

Agreement was signed on the 5th Aug 2011 at the Kerala Secretariat and the program was inaugurated by the Health Minister at the Trivandrum Medical College on the 25th Sept 2011. On the same day a Refresher training was conducted for doctors in Kerala. Dr Mathew led the training program

CURE Clubfoot Jharkhand

An agreement for establishing state level program was signed with the Jharkhand government and the program was launched on the 15th Nov 2011, the 11th Jharkhand Divas. CBM (SARON) has agreed to support this program.

CURE Clubfoot Maharashtra

Medical training as part of starting a state-level program was held on the 1st May 2011 at BJ Wadia Hospital for children, Mumbai. Children were enrolled from August and at present there are 2 weekly clinics in Mumbai that has enrolled over 116 children in the last 7 months. After the signing of agreement with government of Maharashtra, 8 more clinics are also getting ready to enroll children for free treatment. miraclefeet, an international NGO, supports CIIT’s work in Maharashtra. Second refresher training for both Counselors and doctors were held in the last week of Dec 2011 at Bharathi Vidhyapeeth, Pune.

What Your Gift of Rupees 10,000 Covers:

The treatment necessary for children to be seen by a trained physician, cast technician, and counselor for the necessary number of cast treatments, for supplying and fitting a brace (a special shoe and bar that is used for 3-4 years), and the follow-up visits and other quality assurances to ensure good results up until the child’s third or fourth birthday. An older children’s care follows the same pattern, but with varying number of casts and other visits.
